Quasi-continuous wave (QCW) fiber lasers utilize relatively long pulses of high laser power to achieve processing results similar to that of continuous wave (CW) lasers with lower average power.

Quasi-CW pulses provide peak power up to 10X average power and are able to offer up to hundreds of joules of pulse energy.

High Peak Power Increases Process Flexibility

Higher peak powers increase the capabilities of QCW fiber lasers to couple with metallic and non-metallic surfaces at a lower average power. Compared to high-power CW lasers, QCW lasers are often more cost-effective and productive for applications requiring low heat input or high pulse energy.

Featuring multiple wavelengths and single-mode, multi-mode, or dual-beam options, QCW lasers offer flexible operation for a broad variety of applications including metal and non-metal processing and medical applications.

Cost-Effective Laser Power

Although similar to CW lasers, Quasi-W lasers offer a notable difference: their peak power is 10X higher than their average CW power. As a result, QCW lasers provide tens of joules of energy over long pulses from 50 microseconds to 50 milliseconds.

While the same peak power could be delivered by directly modulated CW lasers, QCW lasers are a significantly lower cost alternative for applications with high peak power requirements and lower average power requirements.
Flexible Application Optimization

Flexible Application Optimization

Individual QCW laser pulses can be modulated with analog control to achieve the optimal temporal pulse shape or pulse train for a variety of applications:

  • Multi-pulse bursts for drilling
  • Ramp up for pre-cleaning
  • Enhanced spikes for high reflectivity materials
  • Ramp-down pulses for reduced cracking in crack sensitive materials
  • Drilling

Quasi-CW fiber lasers are capable of achieving excellent hole quality at speeds of several thousand holes per second by utilizing a combination of high peak power and long pulse duration.
  • Welding

High peak powers overcome the reflectivity of metals like copper and aluminum with minimal heat input, making quasi-CW lasers an excellent choice for applications like battery welding.
  • Cutting

Single-mode quasi-CW lasers are often used to cut non-metals like ceramics and sapphire -- high beam quality enables IR QCW lasers to couple efficiently with the materials for high-speed, high-quality cutting.
