Challenges

Increasing battery throughput: making lead batteries better is not only possible but how Advanced Battery Concepts has distinguished themselves from the competition. Battery manufacturing is complex and time-consuming and battery welding is a particularly challenging process that requires several different welding operations. The company required a flexible and efficient battery welding solution to manufacture its patented bipolar batteries at scale.

The Solution

A worker using an IPG laser processing machine

After considering their options, the team at Advanced Battery Concepts decided on laser welding as their process of choice due to its precision, speed, and high-quality results. After more research, the company discovered IPG and its multi-application laser workstations.

Beyond the benefits of reliable and energy efficient IPG laser technology, the IPG multi-axis machine fit the team's requirements in a number of ways. With a compact footprint and a generous work envelope, the system takes up a modest amount of space on the floor while accepting both a variety of battery assemblies and individual components. The flexibility allows operators to perform operations like joining the SAE terminal post to the busbar and placing the entire battery inside the system to weld the busbar to the battery's terminal brackets.

Advanced Battery Concepts also introduced an IPG 30 W integrated laser marking system for treating foil surface before welding. When a shipment of foil is received, it often contains contaminants that can form a chemical barrier between the positive and negative acted material and the foil surface. Advanced Battery Concepts collaborated with the IPG Application Labs to develop this surface treatment process.
