IPG Partners with University College London to Advance Laser Technology for Material Research

Oxford, UK – December 10, 2024 – IPG Photonics Corporation has achieved a new milestone in their partnership with University College London (UCL), by delivering state-of-the-art high-power lasers, laser depth dynamics, and their auxiliary equipment at the UCL lab at Research Complex at Harwell.

This cutting-edge equipment will be integral to the work of Dr. Chu Lun Alex Leung as part of his IPG Photonics/Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellowship in Synchrotron Calibrated Laser Processing Technologies (SEARCH). The research focuses on developing an innovative imaging platform that integrates X-ray and light-based imaging to deepen understanding of laser-material interactions and advance fundamental knowledge in laser technologies.

The ultimate goal is to revolutionize the calibration and application of laser and sensing technologies, enabling easier flaw detection and closed-loop process control. These advancements will pave the way for manufacturing defect-free components for electric vehicles and advanced propulsion systems, revolutionizing manufacturing standards.

Dr. Leung expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am excited to develop and deploy use-inspired technologies with IPG Photonics Inc. and its subsidiaries in the UK, Germany, and Canada. Looking forward to working with IPG and UCL teams to shed light on laser material processing.”

Iurii Markushov, Corporate Vice President, Global Applications at IPG Photonics, added, “This partnership aligns seamlessly with our mission to advance laser technologies that enable innovative manufacturing solutions. By combining our state-of-the-art high-power laser systems with Dr Leung’s cutting-edge research, we are not only pushing the boundaries of material processing but also contributing to the broader goals of sustainable manufacturing and a net-zero future."
